So I was diagnosed with diabetes by my heart doctor a few weeks ago. It was a wake up call. My past two annual executive check ups indicate that my numbers were pre-diabetic. The doctor warned me that I should diet and exercise more often, But I didn’t listen. So here I am.
I’m 41. I have a history of diabetes. My grandmother from my mother’s side had it. My mother and and her siblings have it. Now, I have it as well.
But I’m not accepting this sitting down. I’m fighting it.
Even if they’re making me take Metformin twice a day, I did a full 180° and changed my lifestyle — no more sugar, junk food, far lesser carbs than before, and lots of vegetables. I also exercise almost every day. I bike or walk for about 30 minutes in the Ateneo campus after work.
I think I’m doing significant progress. I bought a glucometer a few days ago, and the numbers are good so far. The highest reading I’ve got is 111 mg/dL. That’s in the morning before breakfast. I’ve also lost 6.4 lbs. in that short span of time.
Next week I’m going to the Diabetes Center at the Medical City for my Living with Diabetes talk and to consult a nutritionist. In two weeks, I’m going back to my new endocrinologist. By that time, I plan to show her the data I’ve been collecting and surprise her with my progress.
