I really hate this 150MB email capacity that we have in the office. My thumbdrive has a bigger capacity than that! Heck, even my cellphone’s internal memory is bigger! We’re supposed to be heading the digital initiatives of this company and yet this policy still dates back to last decade. If their IT cannot handle that, then just move everything to Google Apps! It’s free and it has gigabytes and gigabytes of space for each account.
Starting things right
January 23, 2010I’m starting things right this year. Well, make that starting one thing right, and that is I bought and set-up the domain for my bike blog, Bisikleta.ph. Actually, I bought it last year but I just didn’t have the time to figure out how to set-up those DNS entries until half an hour ago. Now, I’m so happy that it’s not just a domain forwarding deal anymore – that when the user clicks in to read the entry, the domain would adjust to the corresponding URL and not remain as www.bisikleta.ph.
With that, I think I should be more serious in terms of doing some entries on biking. I’ve already earned $13 on that through Google Ads. I’m thinking I can push that further this year. I know it’s not much for now, but I don’t know how much potential it has if I push it a bit. I want to find out.
First Post of 2010
January 17, 2010I actually have nothing much to say, really, for my first post for 2010. I just want you guys to know that this blog is still alive. I have a nice update in my bike blog on the first philippine-designed and made full suspension mountain bike. Check that one out. Ciao for now.
Reflections on Making My DVD Player Region-Free
December 2, 2009In my quest to make my Samsung HT-Z210 region-free, I managed to fuck it up. It worked a while for about three months and then suddenly it can only play US discs (region 1) and not DVDs that I bought from the Philippines (region 3). What irony!
I went to the web searching for possible answers. I saw one post in a forum of a guy who experienced the same problem but there was no response from others. After reading that, I started to feel helpless until I visited the product page in the Samsung site and saw that they have a guide for firmware updates.
Hmmm. Seemed like I had nothing to lose (except for the DVD player) so I downloaded the PDF guide and the firmware file and followed the steps. I have to admit this isn’t exactly the most user-friendly manual in the world, but I managed to figure things out. Now my DVD is back in tip-top condition. It can now play region 3 discs and I’ve yet to try if it can still play region 1 discs as well. If it won’t, it doesn’t matter. I have my new Blu-ray player to do that job.
The moral of the story? I can think of several:
1. It’s OK to play around with your stuff as long as you can fix it or at least be willing to pay the consequences.
2. Common sense is way better than Google.
3. Don’t be greedy. If I didn’t wish for a multi-region DVD player, I wouldn’t have had this problem in the first place.
Condo rules suck
November 21, 2009It’s my first time to live in a condo, and in these few weeks that I’ve been here, all I can say is it sucks.
In our old place, you can have stuff delivered and assembled any time we want. Here, you can’t just do that. You got to get a gate pass from the administration building and a separate working permit that has to be approved by the building engineering department. In addition, no work is allowed on Sundays and work people should wear pants and shoes. What the fuck!
Just to illustrate, I bought a closet from one of the furniture shops at Market! Market! I had to put it on hold for a week because the first schedule fell on a Sunday (They don’t allow people to work on stuff on that day). It’s arriving today, but I had to call them up to say that they better hurry because the window for delivery and installation is until 5:00 p.m.
I hate it.

November 16, 2009Pacquiao’s Fight: The Best and Worst of the Filipino
November 16, 2009Yesterday saw the best and worst of the Filipino.
It was a glorious moment as Manny “the Pacman” Pacquiao defeated Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico. The fight lasted for 12 rounds, and in each of those rounds, everyone watching was glued to the screen. As he takes his seventh World Championship title, he uplifts the hope of the whole Filipino nation – a country recovering from the onslaught of several typhoons these past two months. That championship belt not only adorns the waist of the 145-pound boxer, but also each Filipino no matter what his status in life may be.
With the good comes the bad. And this is in the form of ad loading during the whole fight. I timed it and it was about seven to eight minutes of commercials per gap. That is not right. As a friend replied to my tweet, with that loading, the Filipino cannot enjoy the fight anymore.
I’m thinking (and this is my opinion), instead of putting all these ads that bores viewers to hell, why not just increase the rates? It’ll be like our own version of Superbowl, where a few seconds of ad would cost millions of pesos. It’s a win-win situation: the viewers won’t get bored, the ads get viewed attentively by people, and it lessens the spoilers.
Anyway, I’d like to congratulate Manny for a job well done. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!
That’s Not Right
November 11, 2009You know something’s fishy when your Admin Officer is sporting LCD monitors while your creatives are using three year-old CRTs. While the latter is trying his best to use Photoshop in a 17″ screen, the former is loving the full glory of Mafia Wars in full digital display.
Fail.
And now the news…
October 30, 2009UPDATE (10:33 a.m.): Passed by Burgundy on my way to work. I was expecting to see the place teeming with cops and media men, but instead there was none as if nothing happened. Weird.
_____
I woke to the news of a bomb explosion in Katipunan, Quezon City. I’ve only read it from tweets, and based from these the explosion was in the 7-11 convenience store in Burgundy Place. They say that the place now is infested by cops, and I’ll be able to get a first-hand eyewitness account of that later when I pass by on my way to work.
Also in the news, a fresh new typhoon is forecasted to hit Manila and other parts of Luzon this weekend. A signal number three alert level might be announced. That’s one typhoon every weekend, and super typhoons at that.
What is this world coming to?
Upgraded my Macbook’s HD to 500GB
October 27, 2009I upgraded my Macbook’s hard drive to 500GB and, with the help of my Time Machine back-up, I was able to get it up to speed in just a few hours. It was such a wonderful experience with the Mac’s step by step process that I can’t imagine doing it any other way.
All I did was
(1) Installed the new Seagate hard drive
(2) Inserted my Snow Leopard installer DVD
(3) Formatted the new HD to Mac Journaled
(4) Clicked on Restore Using Time Machine
(5) inserted the Time Machine external HD
(6) left it to install what needs to be installed
Easy!
Couch Day Today
October 27, 2009The Our Home people are delivering the couch and coffee table today. Because Charo didn’t go to work yesterday, I was tasked to make sure that this delivery is as smooth as possible. I called Marge, who works in our building administration office, to know the how-tos in securing a gate pass. Based from our short discussion, it was actually quite easy – get a form from the guard at the lobby, fill it up and have them submit this to building administration for approval. No sweat.
I also texted Mariel, our broker, on helping us with securing the permit, just to be sure. She said that our existing gate pass covers this already and that there’s no need to get a new one. Cool!
So I guess we’re ready with another major episode of this moving thing event today. Wish us luck!
Moving in: The First Weekend
October 26, 2009The first weekend of moving in went extremely well. Instead of doing a one-time big-time thing, we opted to do things nice and slow. I think that decision was a good thing. The whole process was so relaxed.
Last Saturday, my sister lent us her truck, where we loaded some items from La Vista and brought it to our unit at Pioneer Highlands. We hired four men to carry our stuff. The whole transfer took us 20 minutes from unloading the items to bringing it to the unit, and that includes a small ref, an aircon, three balikbayan boxes full of various items, racks, foldable tables, chairs, a cooler and cleaning materials. Not bad at all! And since the boys are already there, I asked them to install the window-type air-conditioning unit that we brought.
Sunday was cleaning day, and similar to the set-up from the previous day I brought in extra help to clean the unit up. Three to be exact. These guys cleaned everything – from the rooms, windows, walls and floors to even washing the dishes, glasses, plates and utensils that were given to us in our wedding a few years back.
Tomorrow, the sofa and coffee table that we bought from Our Home will be delivered, while the bed frame, mattress and a new 1.5HP aircon is scheduled to be delivered on Saturday. We just need to clear this with the building admin and it’s a go.
There are still a lot of items that need to be bought or transferred, but I’m sure everything will be in order very soon.
Reparenting the Child Within: The Day After
October 19, 2009I thought I’ll be able to go to work today but I guess I was wrong. Yesterday’s exercises from the personal growth workshop that I attended over the weekend drained me so I’m taking the day off to sleep and recuperate. I texted my boss about taking the leave and promised that I’ll tell her about it when I get back.
Talking about the workshop that I attended, it is called Reparenting the Child Within. It was facilitated by the good people of the RCW Foundation in their nice little building along C. Salvador Street, Varsity Hills, Loyola Heights in Quezon City. It ran from Friday night to Sunday evening. Now I don’t want to give it away. All I can say is that it opened my eyes and made me more aware of caring for myself. Yes, I highly recommend it.
If you’re interested to attend, there’s one next month and the month after that (they said it was a monthly thing) so you can sign up. For details, get in touch with Mae at +63 921 633 2587 or log in to their site (which isn’t updated yet) at http://www.rcwfi.org.
Moving Out
October 13, 2009After four years, we’ll be moving out of dear old La Vista village to finally live on our own. We’ve been toying about the idea for a long time already, but it’s only now that we decided to really go for it.
For me, it’s a mix of excitement and fear. It’s exciting because it’s a new stage in our lives where we’ll be making the decisions on our own. There’s fear because we will have to take in the consequences of our actions, both good and bad.
Being used to living away from my family since high school, I’m a bit used to this set-up. I just have to familiarize myself with the area for a few weeks. After that, I’m all OK.
I can’t say the same for Charo. She only lived in a dorm with her friends for about a year during her first year in college. After that, her parents transferred to La Vista.
Whatever happens, I think this is going to be really fun. Our adventure starts soon.
